When Event participants access lab VMs in the Heropa workspace, we use an Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) broker to establish and manage the sessions. This helps event hosts and instructors manage the Classroom view so they can provide remote over-the-shoulder assistance and access participant environments.
With Direct RDP, event participants can connect to their VMs directly via RDP, without using the Heropa workspace.
Some additional configuration is required to enable RDP session mirroring in the Classroom view.
Before you start
- Ensure the VM template is correctly configured to support RDP shadowing.
- Obtain the PowerShell script from Heropa Support to configure the VM image for direct RDP session shadowing.
Steps to Enable Direct RDP
1. Configure the Event Template:
- Disable the Firewall: Ensure the firewall is disabled to allow RDP connections.
- Enable File and Print Sharing: This setting must be enabled.
- Set Up RDP Shadowing: Modify the registry values to enable RDP shadowing.
Note: Heropa Support can provide you with a PowerShell script that can be used to configure your VM image
2. Enable Direct RDP Mode
Template:
Enabling Direct RDP for within a template will ensure that all environments created from the template will have Direct RDP turned on when they launch.
- In the template’s Configuration tab, switch the Direct Access toggle to ‘ON’.
Event:
Enabling Direct RDP from within the event is useful for an instructor who needs to turn on Direct RDP on behalf of a student.
- In the student environment that you want to turn on Direct Access to
- In the environment’s Configuration tab, switch the Direct Access toggle to ‘ON’.
Workspace:
This is the method that the student can use from within their workspace.
- Open the workspace (or ask the student to) and click on the cog button next to the VM name
- Select “Direct RDP” to enable direct RDP mode.
Once Direct RDP is enabled
- When an event participant accesses the workspace for their environment, they will see a splash screen with their connection details, including username, password, and IP address.
- Instructors can mirror the session in the Classroom.
Troubleshooting
Session mirroring for direct access from the event classroom will only work if:
- The VM has been configured correctly.
- The environment has direct access enabled.
