Use the Open workspace VMs in a new browser window feature to view a virtual machine in a separate browser window. This makes it easier to work across multiple monitors, follow host presentations, or keep instructions visible while completing tasks. Once enabled, the feature is available to any user working in a Heropa workspace, and supports all environment types.
Note: This feature is available on request. Contact Heropa Support to enable it for your company.
Prerequisites
Before using this feature, ensure:
- The feature has been enabled for your company by Heropa Support.
- You are accessing your VM via the workspace (RDP or SSH via the browser).
- The VM is running and connected.
Open a VM in a new window
- In the workspace, select the VM you want to open.
- From the top navigation bar, locate the VM’s gear icon:
- Each pinned VM shows its own gear icon.
- The main VMs dropdown includes a gear icon for the currently active VM.
- Select Open VM in new window.
- A new browser window opens containing your VM. You can move this window to another monitor or position it side by side with the main workspace.
Work with the main workspace and the VM window
- You can continue to use workspace features such as Host screen, Follow host, chat, and instructions in the main window.
- Hosts can still join a student VM for assistance.
- Each VM can be opened in its own separate window.
- If the VM shuts down, restarts, or the RDP/SSH connection ends, the pop-out window closes automatically.
Return the VM to the workspace
When a VM is open in another window, the main workspace displays a message: "VM is open in another window".
You have two options:
- Open here: Closes the pop-out window and reopens the VM inside the main workspace.
- Go to window: Brings the separate VM window into focus if you can’t locate it.
When to use this feature
Use this feature when you want to:
- Follow a host’s presentation while keeping your VM visible.
- Work across multiple monitors without switching tabs.
- View instructions, slides, or documentation while interacting with the VM.
- Separate your VM session from the main workspace for a cleaner layout.
- Work across multiple VMs in parallel by placing each VM in its own window or on separate monitors.
